Memorial Day is a day dedicated to remembrance of those who have gave the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation. It is easy to become casual in our celebration and get lost in the barbecues, family gatherings and outdoor activities. Nothing is wrong with those things, but here are some simple things you can do to keep the spirit of Memorial Day alive and well!

1) Raise an American Flag! Raise your flag all the way to the top then slowly lower it to half-mass until noon. Then at noon, raise the flag full staff for the rest of the day. The purpose of the half-mass position is to remember those who have given their lives for our country, then raising the flag in resolve to not let their sacrifice be in vain.
2) Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance. In December 2000, this resolution was passed that asks our nation to observe a moment of remembrance at 3pm local time. To do so, you may “voluntarily or informally observe in your own way a Moment of Remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever you are doing for a moment of silence or listening to Taps.”
3) Participate in a Memorial Day Activity! Some ideas could be visiting the Fort Douglas Museum in Salt Lake City or the Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park in Bluffdale!
Whatever you end up deciding to do, remember those who have given everything that we may enjoy the blessings of freedom in this country and also the importance of standing up for our rights as citizens.
